Heavy-duty machinery or work tables may occasionally need to be moved outdoors to complete applications, resulting in the possibility of encountering a ground surface that is uneven. Because it could be potentially dangerous or difficult to perform work duties from an elevated surface that is not level, securing specialized casters to the bottom of each work material will aid with stabilizing the large items necessary to complete a task.

An Overview Of How Leveling Casters Work

Standard casters consist of a wheel and metal plate, which are designed to attach to a base plate that is being secured to an item that is being moved. Two drawbacks of a standard caster design are that a stabilizer may not be supplied that will hold a wheel in place and that a stabilizer may not supply enough support to efficiently hold an item steady on an uneven surface.

A leveling caster contains a slightly elevated design. A wider metal housing section is secured to a rubber wheel and the wheel itself can be drawn up into the housing or extended downward, depending upon if an item is being moved or stabilized.

While a wheel is retracted, a rubber footpad that contains grippers will rest on the ground or flooring where an item will be utilized. The extension and retraction mechanism is controlled via a dial that rests in the middle of a caster. After manually adjusting the wheel or foot pedal, an item can either be moved across flooring or outdoor property or will remain stable.

The Tools Necessary For The Attachment

A set of metal or wooden base plates and leveling casters that each contain a rectangular plate need to be attached to the item being moved. A bolt set will come with a set of leveling casters, and one bolt and nut will need to be secured to the corner of each caster plate and base plate.

Each base plate that is being secured to the bottom corners of a heavy-duty piece of machinery or a table will need to be lined up, prior to aligning the caster underneath it and using the bolts and nuts to secure it. Each caster should be attached separately.

Once the pieces are secure, adjusting the dial that is located in the center of each caster will result in either the wheel moving downward or upward, depending upon the direction that the dial is adjusted.  Leveling casters can remain on the bottom of items that will occasionally be moved to various parts of an indoor or an outdoor setting.
